Into the dark

By Johnny Haglund, mercredi novembre 02, 2016
What used to be. When doing urban exploration, there are so many places from our recent history that pops up. Places that played an important role a few decades ago but now just stand there and rust away. Taken on an EOS-1D X Mark II with an EF20mm f/2.8 USM lens; the exposure was 2.5 secs at f/6,3, ISO 500. Tripod used.

To find a hole in the ground, just big enough for me to squeeze in, is always tempting. I am curious about what there is to be found inside that dark world. I’ve been to several caves in Norway, but recently there is another kind of underground exploration that has caught my attention: urban exploration.

On my recent adventure I went deep into the woods of Sweden with three friends. Here we found a huge underground factory from the time when Europe was at war. When doing this kind of photography, I focus a lot on how I can transfer the dark, cold, silent feeling of being underground through my images. To do so I need a lot of light, and I need to use it wisely.

When I put my EOS-1D X Mark II on a tripod and use a long exposure, I can paint the surrounding world with my flashlight. And because the EOS-1D X Mark II is extremely good on low light, I can use only a little light here and there, and it will still be caught by the camera’s sensor. And when I need a bit faster shutter speed to freeze the movement of my friend and his flashlights, I can do so without worrying too much about high ISO.

In this way I can create my underground images just the way I want to…
