Taking a photo trip with Canon's new EOS 5DS

In my backpack, on a photo trip to Andalucia and Gibraltar, were the new Canon EOS 5DS and the EF11-24mm f/4L USM zoom lens. The new camera has 50.6 million pixels; an ultra-high resolution. For the high data volume [image files] I needed Toshiba memory cards with high capacities and fast write speeds. This was my first trip with a SLR camera with high-resolution and I wanted to be sure the files were safely stored.

The camera, with its high-resolution specification, is designed to capture details. For me, these were landscape shots in the Doñana National Park in Spain. In collaboration with the WWF, we had the opportunity to go to certain areas of the park with a ranger. One place was the coast, with its impressive cliffs of sand. After a walk of about 40 minutes, with a heavy camera bag and tripod, we arrived at the coast. Fine sand and hot temperatures made for a strenuous walk, especially on the way back to the car; which was a night walk with a headlamp.

A stable Sachtler tripod was important for me because it was squally and windy on the coast. The tripod was important for the very fine details and longer exposure times, so the potential of the camera could be exploited. I use functions like HDR or multiple exposure, but only when working with a tripod.

Internally the camera has a new system to reduce mirror vibration levels; this helps to optimally reproduce sharpness and [overall] image quality. So, the fine structures in the sand could be pictured perfectly. The autofocus is similar to the EOS 5D Mark III, so the 41 cross-type sensors are perfectly adequate. Even in low-light the autofocus works very precisely. The different [AF] settings always give me a safe feeling in each shooting situation.

The high volumes of data, between 50MB and 75MB, must be processed quickly from the EOS 5DS. The new Dual DIGIC 6 processors provide dynamic processing. With five images per second I can also use the camera for wildlife shoots. But it is important to have a fast burst rate and I am always ready [to get the shot]. Since the camera has two card slots, one CF and SD compartment, I never felt the embarrassment of missing a situation thanks to fast and reliable memory cards, such as the Toshiba ones.

Just along the coast it was salty and sandy - two of the "enemies" of all photo equipment. It is vitally important that you provide the camera and lens with enough protection. A robust housing means no penetration of dust and moisture is allowed. Whether the tripod or a memory card falls down in the sand, or the wind blows sand on the camera or into the sun hood from the lens, after a trip it [salt or sand] would crackle everywhere.
