The other side of Pakistan

Skardu bazaar. Great contrasts appear as the sun lights up a meat seller’s stand in the Skardu bazaar. Using spot metering when shooting images like this helps me to get the right exposure. Taken on an EOS-1D X Mark II and an EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens; the exposure was 1/200sec at f/8, ISO 320.

Pakistan is often associated with negative news; the Taliban, corruption charges against several of the country’s politicians, the still ongoing dispute with India over the Siachen Glacier and other not overly flattering information. And when a country is described with negative news for too long, the world starts to believe that this is the only reality.

This is my fourth visit to Pakistan and I know one thing for sure; Pakistan is a lot more than the Taliban and corrupt politicians. I have not been everywhere on our planet, but I have visited quite a few places over the last 30 years, and I have no problem stating that Pakistan has some of the most beautiful places on this planet – and some of the people who live here are so welcoming and friendly it's almost hard to believe.

My assignment is merely to portray “the other side of Pakistan”. I flew to Skardu and from here I’m travelling first east towards the border with India, and then my plan is to continue slowly all the way west to the border with Afghanistan.

In my bag, I’ve got three cameras: an EOS 5D Mark IV, an EOS-1D X Mark II and a small compact Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II. There are not many challenges except the hardest of them all; simply trying to get good images.

The only problem might be the dust, which is everywhere. But my SLRs are equipped with very good weather proofing, so if I’m careful when changing lenses and use the cameras inbuilt sensor cleaning daily, it should really be no problem.

On the way to school. Taken on an EOS-1D X Mark II with an EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens; the exposure was 1/4000sec at f/3.2, ISO 160.
