From dust to dawn

Aliens. The dark, the dust, the silhouettes and the lights from passing cars, creates a strange atmosphere in an unlit backstreet of Kathmandu. Taken on an EOS 5D Mark IV with an EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens; the exposure was 1/10 sec at f/6.3, ISO 1600. Tripod used.

Nepal is a great country for everyone with even the slightest interest in photography. My first trip to Nepal was back in 1991, when I trekked alone for a month in the Solokhumbu area. A young backpacker with an old Canon T90 was awestruck by Mount Everest, Ama Dablam and everything else under that crisp, blue Himalayan sky.

Still impressed today, absolutely, but on my fourth journey to the land of high mountains, I’ve also been turning my camera to other, more daily life kind of photos. And Kathmandu is a place so full of these motifs that I could stay there for a month shooting different things every day.

One of the sights that caught my attention was the extremely dusty streets of Kathmandu after sunset. People on the way home from work, walking in the middle of dark streets where dust continuously dances in the air due to all the passing cars and motorcycles, made an almost otherworldly atmosphere.

Two nights in a row I found a dusty, dark street with lots of traffic and mounted my tripod to play with my EOS 5D Mark IV like a boy in a toy store until dawn stopped me. Well almost…
